The South West Coast Path is less than half a mile away from Gear Farm, and our cottages are situated on the field footpath. Thanks to our location in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty all the walks locally, whilst occasionally demanding, are certainly always very rewarding with spectacular landscapes leading to views over the Atlantic Ocean.
St Ives has a range of sandy beaches such as Porthminster and Porthmeor suitable for the whole family, but thanks to the entire peninsula being surrounded by sea wonderful beaches can be discovered in all directions. Particular favourites locally include Porthcurno, Sennen and Gwenver. All these beaches are patrolled by lifeguards during the main season.
West Cornwall has something for everyone, so where to start? A visit to St Michael’s Mount is a must, not least for the magical experience of walking towards the Mount along the tidal causeway and if the tide allows the boat ride back on the return journey.
There are numerous Engine Houses – relics of Cornwall’s mining heritage – punctuating the landscape in these parts, visitors can discover more at the National Trust’s Levant Mine and even go underground at nearby Geevor Tin Mine.
The Minack Theatre at Porthcurno is an unforgettable way to enjoy not only a performance but also a spectacular backdrop of the open sea and cliffs, the sun setting and even the occasional ship passing by!
Other historic properties abound in Cornwall, and thanks to our mild climate the majority boast extraordinary gardens and they are often truly spectacular earlier in the season, choose from nearby Trengwainton, or others such as Glendurgan, Trevarno and Trebah a little further afield. Despite being an hour or so away by road, The Lost Gardens of Heligan and The Eden Project are both well worth the journey.
We are blessed with two excellent pubs close to Gear Farm, The Gurnard’s Head, within a 5 minute stroll and The Tinner’s Arms in nearby Zennor. Happily both offer really excellent food, open fires, real ales, fine wines and a warm welcome – what else could you wish for!
You will be truly spoilt for choice when it comes to eating out in nearby St Ives, as it boasts an excellent range of restaurants to suit all budgets and tastes, many of which have won numerous awards, favourites include the Porthminster Beach Café – which is literally right on the beach and the café at Tate St Ives which is a perfect spot for lunch.
